Inside Look at PhD and Doctoral Programs

There’s no such thing as the best PhD program for everyone in Tennessee, but you can find the best program for you. There’s a wide variety of high-quality, affordable programs across the state.

If you’re looking for increased flexibility, online PhD programs in Tennessee can work around your life and career while you pursue a high-quality education. To start your search, here are three of the best universities in Tennessee for online doctoral programs.

University of Memphis

Logo of the University of Memphis in Tennessee featuring a dark blue "U of M" emblem with white letters on a green background, accompanied by the words "The University of Memphis" in white.

The University of Memphis offers several online doctorates, including a fully online Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).

This program prepares licensed RNs for advanced clinical roles, including work as nurse practitioners, with a focus on health equity and rural care.

While coursework is online, students may complete clinical hours locally. The program also uses a practice-based format instead of a dissertation, making it more hands-on than traditional PhDs.

Union University

Logo of Union University in Tennessee featuring a red and white shield emblem with three books, flanked by green banners with the words "Union University." The motto "Soli Deo Honor et Gloria

Union University offers an online Doctor of Education (EdD) designed for both licensed teachers and those new to the field.

The program combines foundational coursework with advanced seminars, with priority admission given to applicants with teaching experience.

Students complete a faculty-guided research project instead of a traditional dissertation, with a focus on preparing effective educators and school leaders.

Vanderbilt University

Logo of Vanderbilt University in Tennessee featuring a large gold letter "V" with the words "Vanderbilt University" in green, displayed in an elegant serif font.

Vanderbilt University offers a nationally recognized online PhD in education with a focus on K–12 reform.

Students complete some coursework but spend most of their time working one-on-one with a research mentor, including on their online dissertation.

The program is designed for licensed teachers with experience and offers flexible, part-time options, making it a strong fit for working educators.

Vanderbilt does not currently offer other fully online PhD programs, though some may include hybrid elements.

PhD and Doctoral Program Types

Not all online PhD programs in Tennessee are the same or designed for the same type of student.

Different program types are built for different career goals and learning styles.

Understanding these options can help you choose the right doctoral path for you.

Full-Time PhD/Doctoral Programs

Full-time PhD programs in Tennessee are a strong fit for students pursuing academic or research careers.

These programs are often research-intensive and may include funding, teaching assistantships, and advanced coursework.

Examples include the PhD in biology at the University of Tennessee and the PhD in English at Vanderbilt University, both of which emphasize research and faculty collaboration.

Part-Time PhD/Doctoral Programs

Part-time PhD programs in Tennessee offer flexibility for students balancing work and other responsibilities.

These programs take longer to complete but allow you to adjust your course load and study on a more flexible schedule.

Examples include the PhD in business analytics at the University of Tennessee and the Doctor of Education at Vanderbilt University.

Fully Funded PhD/Doctoral Programs

Earning a PhD can be expensive, but fully funded programs in Tennessee can help reduce costs.

These programs often include:

  • Tuition waivers
  • Living stipends
  • Work as a teaching or research assistant

Examples include the PhD in English at Vanderbilt University and the PhD in business analytics at the University of Tennessee.

Keep in mind that many fully funded options are campus-based rather than online.

No-GRE PhD/Doctoral Programs

If you want to skip standardized testing, no-GRE doctoral programs in Tennessee are available.

These programs are a good fit for students with test anxiety or limited time during the application process.

Examples include the doctorate in computational engineering at the University of Tennessee–Chattanooga and the doctorate in engineering at Tennessee Tech University.

Accelerated PhD/Doctoral Programs

Most PhD programs take around five years, but accelerated options can shorten that timeline.

Some programs can be completed in under three years, though one-year options are rare.

Examples in Tennessee include the accelerated Doctor of Education at Union University and the accelerated Doctor of Social Work at the University of Tennessee.

No Dissertation PhD/Doctoral Programs

Most PhD programs require a dissertation, but not every doctoral path is research-focused.

If your goal is leadership or professional practice, a no-dissertation option may be a better fit.

Examples in Tennessee include the Doctor of Education at Union University and the Doctor of Nursing Practice at the University of Memphis, both of which emphasize applied work over traditional research.

The Best Fields to Earn Your PhD and Doctoral Degree

Nursing Practice

A Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is a strong option for RNs looking to move into advanced clinical or leadership roles.

These programs build on your experience and prepare you to take on expanded responsibilities in patient care.

With a nursing shortage in Tennessee, DNP graduates are in demand and can find strong career opportunities across the state.

  • Selectivity: Based on overall admissions rate. More selective schools ranked higher.
  • Online learning availability: Based on percentage of grad students taking at least one class online and number of online doctoral programs in subject area reported by the school.

Opportunities for Doctoral Funding

Paying for a doctoral degree can be a financial burden, but it doesn’t have to be. There are a variety of financial aid opportunities available to doctoral students in Tennessee, including scholarships/grants, fellowships, and work-study programs. Students can also work as graduate research assistants or as teaching assistants to help ease the financial burden.

Sometimes these assistantships or fellowships fully fund the PhD, meaning students don’t have to pay tuition, and they get a living stipend.

For example, Vanderbilt University offers fully funded fellowships to all doctoral students in the English department, and the University of Tennessee offers fully funded assistantships to select degree programs, such as their four fellowships allotted for business analytics doctoral students.

From PhDs to Paychecks: Average Earnings in Tennessee

Graduating from an online PhD program in Tennessee isn’t only a rewarding experience; it can skyrocket your career and earning potential.

In Tennessee, those with a PhD earn a median wage of $71,000 annually, compared to the $60,830 annual salary of those with only an undergraduate degree.

Of course, the opportunities and corresponding salaries differ from industry to industry. Someone with a DBA in human resources most likely won’t be applying to the same jobs as a nurse practitioner. While you should consider the options in your field, here are some of the corresponding job titles and earnings of graduates from popular PhD programs.
