School Spotlights: Online DBA Programs in Virginia

Searching for quality online Doctor of Business Administration programs in Virginia can be overwhelming. To help you get started, we’ve outlined a few quality options. The following programs offer experienced instructors, relevant coursework, and the flexibility of online courses.

Regent University

The DBA degree offered at Regent University is just one great online Doctor of Business Administration program in Virginia. The university combines high-quality instruction, experienced mentors, and the maximum flexibility of online learning. Students can choose from several concentrations, including entrepreneurship, executive leadership, and marketing. Students in Regent University’s DBA program also receive mentorship from faculty and other professionals through the school’s executive mentor program.

The program comprises 54 credits, and full-time students can expect tuition of $6,120 per semester ($1,020 x 6 credit hours). Regent University also allows part-time study. You can apply to begin your education at one of the eight start dates spread throughout the year. Successful applicants must hold an MBA or master’s degree in a related field from a regionally accredited university. If you’ve met that qualification, you can submit an official application, academic transcripts, and resume to the school.

Liberty University

Liberty University’s online Doctor of Business Administration program is 100% remote and is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). The online DBA program consists of 60 credit hours divided into 8-week courses. Motivated students could graduate in as little as three years, and the tuition is competitively priced at $595/credit hour for full-time study and $650/credit hour for part-time study. Military members may be eligible for tuition as low as $300 per hour! Some previous MBA coursework may be eligible for credit through the program’s generous transfer policy.

This DBA program offers 17 specializations, including strategic management, international business, finance, and accounting. DBA students can supplement their coursework with online resources and help from full-time research assistants available through the school’s library.

Marymount University

The part-time online DBA program at Marymount University is an attractive option for individuals who plan to work while enrolled in doctorate courses. Coursework runs for 36 credit hours and, like many similar programs, can be completed in about three years. The cost per credit hour may seem high, but its credit hours are low, so the tuition ends up being on par with the total cost of other schools’ DBA programs. Marymount requires prospective students to hold an MBA or master’s degree in a related field from a regionally accredited institution and have at least five years of professional work experience.

Marymount’s DBA program uses an interdisciplinary approach and integrates business, innovation, leadership, and technology coursework with applied research requirements. Applied research should help students find solutions for real-world business problems. And because dissertation research and planning begin on day one, the writing and defense process may feel comparatively manageable.

PhD in Business vs. DBA: Which Degree is Right for You?

There are two paths to a doctoral degree in business administration: a PhD or a DBA. These degrees differ in their approach to research. DBA Specializations in Virginia Online Programs

In addition to the core business curriculum, many online DBA programs in Virginiaoffer specializations. These focus on the skills and knowledge that directly apply to your professional interests. Specializing in an area, whether accounting, healthcare management or something else, can equip you with the unique skills and knowledge you need to succeed. This can also lead to better, more relevant networking opportunities in Virginia and beyond.

Human Resources Management

Online DBA programs often feature a specialization in human resources management. This can prepare you to lead an HR department, as you’ll learn about essential topics like the labor market, ethics, and compensation. You’ll also use existing research and strategies to solve real-world human resources problems.

International Business

For individuals who want to be involved with an organization that works worldwide, a specialization in international business may be a good fit. Students will likely focus on coursework related to the global economy, international business law and practices, and business strategy. With this specialization, you’ll be equipped to lead a multinational corporation or work as an economist or consultant.

Executive Leadership

Virginia is home to many corporations, government offices, and political organizations, so there may be opportunities for leadership roles. Concentrating on executive leadership equips students with the skills to handle various business issues needing high-level management’s attention, from resource management to communication. This specialization is ideal for anyone working toward a C-suite position.

Accounting

A DBA specialization in accounting focuses on learning advanced accounting and tax principles with the goal of solving real-world financial problems. Focusing your DBA studies on accounting may lead to careers as Chief Financial Officers, economists, or senior consultants.

Consulting

Thanks to the concentration of businesses and government organizations, Virginia (along with its neighbors Maryland and Washington, DC) is home to many consulting firms. A DBA program with a specialization in consulting can prepare you for a leadership role and provide you with skills particularly relevant to consulting, such as building and maintaining client relationships, data analysis, and problem-solving.

Tuition Costs for Online DBA Programs in Virginia

A doctoral degree is a significant financial and time commitment, so it’s important to know the cost expectations before you enroll. Unlike PhD programs, which may come with fellowships and grants, many of the online Doctor of Business Administration programs in Virginia are self-funded. Depending on the program type and length, you can expect to pay tuition in the $35,000-55,000 range. Keep in mind that the cost can be reduced in a number of ways, including financial aid or tuition assistance from an employer. Many DBA students can continue working while enrolled, and these uninterrupted paychecks can make paying tuition a bit easier.

Financial Aid for Virginia DBA Programs

Financial aid for online DBA programsin Virginia can include loans, scholarships/grants, fellowships, assistantships, and work-study positions. Often, the first step is filling out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, as it is a prerequisite for receiving any federal loans or grants. Another significant funding source for doctoral students is fellowships and graduate teaching assistantships administered by higher education institutions and doctoral programs. This aid is often in exchange for undergraduate teaching assistance or research.

For Virginia residents in certain types of graduate and doctoral programs, there is also a state-specific tuition assistance program. In addition to federal, state, and institution-based aid, you can look into private scholarships or tuition reimbursement from your employer. A doctoral program is an investment, but fortunately, online programs are generally much more affordable than in-person options.

Job and Salary Outlook for Virginia DBA Graduates

A doctorate in business administration is the highest level of education in the field, which can give you a real competitive advantage in the job market. And because Virginia is home to many large corporations, government agencies, and consulting firms, there are many opportunities for leadership positions. The following three careers offer a good mix of salary potential and professional growth.

CareerMedian Pay
(2023)
90th Percentile Pay
(2023)
Job Outlook
(2023-33)
Top/Chief Executive$206,680$216,9006%
Human Resources Manager$136,350$239,2006%
Economist$115,730$216,9005%

Top/Chief Executive

Top executives, including CEOs, CFOs, COOs, and other C-suite positions, lead an organization and guide it toward reaching its goals. These individuals must be adept at communication and strategy, and they often have advanced degrees and many years of work experience. While the compensation for top executives varies based on the type of organization, specific location, years of work experience, and degree level, it often exceeds six figures. But don’t let compensation be the only factor you consider: top executives often work long hours and travel frequently, so it might not be ideal for homebodies.

Human Resources Manager

Human resources managers are employed in nearly every industry, and the field is expected to grow a good deal over the next decade. In addition to an advanced degree, these professionals often have multiple years of work experience. If you’re already in the human resources industry, a DBA can serve as a stepping stone to a leadership position or higher compensation.

Economist

Economists deal with data and issues relating to finances and fiscal policy. Sometimes, economists may only need a bachelor’s degree. But for the most part, a master’s or doctorate is essential. The BLS predicts that this profession will experience average growth nationally over the next decade; however, growth in Virginia is expected to be much higher. Further, Virginia is already home to the third-highest number of economist jobs in the country and has the second-highest mean wage for the position.
